Frequently Asked Questions
Neuromodulators
-
Neuromodulators, commonly known as Botox and Dysport are used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are produced from Botulinum Toxin A which, when injected into specific muscles, disrupts the nerve signalling process that stimulates muscle contraction. This in turn has a relaxing effect on facial muscles thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Yes - when injected by a trained professional. Botox has been available for over 20 years and is used to treat both medical and non-medical conditions. All products used at Aesthology have been approved for use in Canada. Many of the adverse reactions recorded occur with illegally purchased products or products that are administered by unqualified professionals.

The results will last 3-4 months on average but everyone is different. Time duration varies based on the individual's muscle strength, expressions, and metabolism. It is advised to book appointments regularly every 3-4 months for the first year, with consistency some people find they may increase the length of time between appointments.
If you choose to stop using neuromodulators your lines will not be worse. Rather when you were using them we slowed down the clock of aging and when you stop having injections your aging clock resumes as normal.

At your appointment, you will be greeted by one of our injectors. We will start with a full face assessment, discuss your concerns, answer questions, and then we can develop a treatment plan. This can take anywhere between 10-25 minutes. When you are feeling comfortable and when time allows, we can proceed with treatment the same day. Neuromodulator appointments take 10-15 minutes and can be done during your lunch break. Follow up appointments and repeat treatments are booked for 15 minutes.

We use a tiny needle, so you will feel a small pinch. Recovery time is minimal, you may have a small raised bump at the injection site for 10-30 minutes after that will resolve. We try to prevent bruising, but the face is vascular; therefore bruising is always possible. This does not affect the efficacy of treatment and make-up can be used to cover any marking that may occur. Occasionally some individuals may experience a slight headache.

Dysport starts working in 3 days with full effects in 14 days. Botox on the other hand takes up to 2 weeks before you will notice a difference. It is advised to book a follow-up appointment at 2 weeks (especially if you are new to Aesthology) to re-assess the effects and to determine if a touch up is needed.

Your injector will ensure that you get the look you want – as natural as you want. Most people simply want to look natural, relaxed and refreshed, without looking “done”. In the experienced hands of the professionals at our clinic, patients tell us friends tell them they look refreshed.
-
Yes, but it is a very rare side effect. The incidence of this side effect is less than 1%. By going to an experienced injector fluent in facial anatomy the risk is reduced further.
-
We charge for Botox/Dysport per unit. We determine the amount based on facial anatomy, strength, and movement of your muscles along with recommended on-label dosing as determined by the manufacturers. We need to ensure we use enough units to achieve results. It is important to use an appropriate dose for results and duration. For example, if we use a smaller than recommended dose we may not relax that muscle completely and we will not get the duration. Book your complimentary consultation to determine the number of units you will require.

No, you cannot. The reason being we do not have any studies to determine the safety of these treatments in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Dermal Fillers
-
Dermal fillers are used to add volume to an area in the face. This is beneficial for a variety of reasons. As we age we lose volume in our face or strength in our skin, fillers can help replace this. We can also use them to enhance or contour an area. The dermal fillers used at Aesthology all contain synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid (HA) that mimics our naturally occurring HA. Young skin is smooth and elastic because it contains large amounts of hyaluronic acid. As we age, the amount of HA in the skin gradually diminishes. As a result, the skin becomes dryer, thinner, and more wrinkled. The gel mimics the naturally occurring substance by adding volume to the skin. When fillers are injected under the surface of the skin, the gel enhances volume, contours, and smooths.
-
We charge dermal fillers in full (1 ml) or half (0.5ml) syringes. We curate treatment plans based on your individual assessment. With this individualized treatment, we will determine the type and quantity of filler needed to achieve your desired results. Regardless of the number of syringes, we will ensure our plan provides you with a natural subtle enhancement.
-
The length of dermal filler depends on the type of filler used along with other factors such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age, and metabolism. On average we have fillers that last anywhere from 6 - 18 months. The HA will naturally integrate into the tissue where it is placed binding with water, adding volume and moisture. The injected dermal filler material will gradually disappear until your skin looks just as it did before the treatment. You can replenish the filler as determined by your injector for desired results.

Pain is very individualized and dependent on one’s tolerance to pain. Prior to treatment, a topical anaesthetic cream can be applied, which takes about 15 minutes to take effect.
-
Dermal fillers can result in bruising, swelling, and bumps depending on the area of the site injected. You do not need to book time off work to recover but be aware this can occur and plan accordingly. We recommend a minimum of two weeks before any important event to allow time for bruising and swelling to resolve. We encourage you to follow up with us for two weeks for re-assessment and if any touch-ups are needed.

At your appointment, you will be greeted by one of our injectors. We will start with a full face assessment, discuss your concerns, answer questions, and then we will curate a treatment plan specific to you. This can take anywhere between 10-25 minutes. When you are feeling comfortable and when time allows, we can proceed with treatment the same day. Dermal filler appointments take 30-60 minutes. Depending on your treatment area we may apply topical freezing and use a needle or cannula technique.
Follow up appointments and repeat treatments are booked for 30-45 minutes. Although you can return to work afterwards, be aware bruising and swelling may be present.
-
No. People with excess facial skin or people who want a major resurfacing of the skin cannot be corrected with fillers alone. Depending on your assessment your injector may tell you that fillers are not appropriate and the desired results can only be achieved through surgery.
-
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers are a natural material, so they dissolve with time. In the event that you feel uncertain about the desired result or there is an unexpected complication, there is a medication called hyaluronidase, which can dissolve the filler quickly.
-
Migration occurs when the dermal filler moves to an undesired area. We see this most commonly in the lips, but it can occur in other areas of the face. Although this is not the desired outcome it can happen to the best injectors. The most common reasons for migration is overfilling the lips, product use, technique, and long term filler use in lips. Migration is corrected by dissolving the filler with hyaluronidase. It is important to identify and correct migration rather than continuing to refill the area. If you are a long term lip filler client, it is recommended to completely dissolve the filler every few years and start fresh. After dissolving any filler it is recommended to wait 2 weeks before refilling.
